Greening Our School

Friday, 11 April 2014

As we have chosen to focus on improving the "biodiversity" of our school's gardens, we have decided to focus our efforts on greening our school's sparse looking quads. We don't have very much to start with, so we have decided to use cuttings from succulents to get started. Last term we planted some vygie seedlings, which are starting to grow. We hope they will get bigger so we can plan them soon!

If you have any garden supplies, tools, old containers or anything you might think may be useful, please send them to us.

We start the second term

Our first meeting this Friday started off with some sad news. For the last two years our club was run by Afri-Oceans, a non-profit organization. Afri-Oceans has been the driving force behind all our activities, but sadly they will not be running their program at our school anymore (at least for now).

As a non-profit, they rely on public funding and are now experiencing a shortfall. Sadly, they will not be returning to our school for the next few weeks. We are really hoping that they secure more funding soon. They are a terrific organization and their educational initiatives have had a tremendous impact on schools around the Western Cape.

Saying that, our club is not without a purpose or work to do. We have a few environmental projects on the go at school, thanks to Eco-Schools, an organization run by WESSA. We registered as an eco-school last year and won our first award for our paper recycling project. We are very excited to be continuing with our eco-school's activities, which will be the main focus of our eco-club for the coming term.

So watch this space to see what we get up to this term!
